Heavy rain likely to return to Gujarat from Sept 12; IMD issues Yellow Alert

Ahmedabad: After a relatively subdued spell of rainfall in several parts of Gujarat, heavy rain is likely to make a return to the state from September 12, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting isolated heavy showers over parts of South Gujarat and coastal Saurashtra.

According to the IMD’s weather forecast bulletin, light to moderate rain and thundershowers are likely to be witnessed across the state over the next seven days, till September 14.

However, the weather system is expected to become more active on September 12 and 13. On September 12-13, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari and Valsad, as well as Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Heavy rain is also likely at isolated places in Amreli and Bhavnagar.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and surface winds of 30–40 kmph, along with light to moderate rain, are also likely at isolated places across several districts during this period.

For September 14, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at a few places across North Gujarat, South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch, suggesting that rainfall activity will continue over the state.

Weather conditions

During the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on September 8, rainfall was recorded at a few places over the South Gujarat region and at isolated places in Kutch. North Gujarat and Saurashtra remained largely dry.

The IMD said the low-pressure area that was earlier over central Uttar Pradesh has weakened, while its associated cyclonic circulation is now located over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar, extending up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

A low-pressure area is also likely to form over the westcentral-northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts around September 11. The developing system is expected to contribute to increased rainfall activity over Gujarat in the following days. DeshGujarat
