AMTS launches AI dash cam pilot project to monitor bus drivers, speed and accidents

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) has launched a pilot project using an AI-based dash camera monitoring system to track bus drivers and road conditions and help determine the causes of accidents.

As part of the pilot, cameras have been installed in three AMTS buses, one at the front of the bus to capture the road and another facing the driver. The system will monitor driver behaviour and send alerts to the control room in cases of negligence or violations.

AMTS Committee Chairman Parag Naik said the system will alert the control room if a driver uses a mobile phone, smokes or falls asleep while driving. It will also issue warnings if a bus exceeds the prescribed speed limit. The control room can then contact the driver through wireless communication or a phone call.

The cameras will also help establish whether an accident occurred due to the AMTS driver or another vehicle, as footage from the road-facing and driver-facing cameras can be reviewed.

The system will additionally track the bus’s location and help determine whether it is operating on schedule. If a bus is delayed due to traffic, the control room will be alerted. It is also expected to help identify instances where drivers keep buses parked for extended periods, leading to delays and passenger complaints.

Naik said that if the pilot project proves successful, the AI-based monitoring system will be extended to more than 900 AMTS buses, allowing the transport service to monitor driver conduct, bus movement, traffic-related delays and road incidents more effectively. DeshGujarat
