Heavy to very heavy rain likely in Gujarat from Sept 12-15; IMD issues orange, yellow alerts

Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms across Gujarat over the next seven days, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places in several districts from September 12 to 15.

According to the IMD’s weather bulletin issued on September 10, a low-pressure area has formed over the north Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood. An upper-air cyclonic circulation over Saurashtra and adjoining areas is also persisting, influencing weather conditions over Gujarat.

On September 12, heavy rains at isolated places are very likely in all the districts of the South Gujarat region, namely Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Tapi, Dang, Navsari and Valsad, as well as in Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas.

On September 13, an orange alert for very heavy rains has been issued for Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Meanwhile, a yellow alert will remain in Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat and Tapi; the Saurashtra districts of Rajkot, Porbandar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath and Botad; and Diu.

On September 14, very heavy rains at isolated places are very likely in the South Gujarat districts of Dang, Navsari and Valsad, as well as in Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. An orange alert is in place for these areas. Furthermore, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat and Tapi; the Saurashtra districts of Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Junagadh, Morbi, Dwarka, Gir Somnath and Botad; and Diu are under a yellow alert.

Other than that, the IMD has issued a thunderstorm yellow alert for all districts of Gujarat on September 13.

On September 15, heavy rains at isolated places are very likely in the Saurashtra districts of Porbandar, Junagadh, Dwarka and Gir Somnath, as well as in Diu. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas.

The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds of 30-40 kmph, accompanied by light to moderate rain, at isolated or scattered places during the period.

The IMD said light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places across Gujarat on September 10-11, with rainfall activity expected to increase from September 12.
