Peak Power Demand in Gujarat Hits Record High of 29,601 MW

Vadodara: Gujarat’s peak electricity demand touched a new high of 29,601 MW on September 7, raising concerns that demand could cross the 30,000 MW mark if the state does not receive adequate rainfall in the coming days.

The latest peak is significantly higher than the 29,000 MW recorded on June 29, indicating a sharp rise in electricity consumption across the state.

With demand nearing the 30,000 MW threshold, the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL) has started purchasing additional electricity from the power exchange to meet the requirement. Gujarat purchased 188 MW of power at ₹10 per unit on Thursday, while 124 MW was procured from the exchange a day earlier.

The increase in demand is also being attributed to the rising requirement for agricultural power. Farmers have been seeking 10 hours of daytime electricity supply to protect their Kharif crops, particularly amid inadequate rainfall in several parts of the state.

Officials are taking measures to meet the increased agricultural demand. However, if rainfall does not resume soon, electricity consumption could rise further, potentially pushing the state’s peak demand beyond 30,000 MW. DeshGujarat
