Two AMTS e-buses operating with same number plate; operator fined ₹5 lakh

Ahmedabad: Two electric buses operated under the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) were found running on the city’s roads with the same registration number plate.

The buses were spotted operating on the same route in the Meghaninagar area, despite having different AMTS code numbers. While their actual RTO registration numbers were different, both vehicles displayed identical number plates. Moreover, one bus had an HSRP (High-Security Registration Plate), while the other did not.

AMTS officials took note of the discrepancy and issued a notice to the concerned operator, seeking an explanation as to how two buses bearing the same registration number were allowed to operate on public roads.

An AMTS official said the RTO registration numbers of the two buses were different, but their number plates had been tampered with. The operator has been fined ₹5 lakh for the violation.

The incident has also raised questions over AMTS’s GPS-based tracking and control room monitoring system. With both buses reportedly operating on the same route, questions have been raised over whether their locations were being monitored properly and why the duplication was not detected. DeshGujarat
