After Latest Rain Spell, How Much Has Gujarat’s Rainfall Deficit Narrowed?

Gandhinagar: So, how much relief has Gujarat gained after the latest spell of rainfall following a long break?

As of the morning of September 20, Gujarat has received 88% of its normal average monsoon rainfall. South Gujarat tops the regions with 113.71%, followed by East-Central Gujarat at 89.10%.

Three regions, however, are still experiencing a deficiency, with Kutch at 57.16%, Saurashtra at 68.07%, and North Gujarat at 70.81% of their respective average rainfall.

The situation in these three regions is not ideal, as they have received less than 80% of their average rainfall. However, the situation is better than it was a week ago.

Just a few days ago, rainfall as a percentage of the average stood at 29.95% in Kutch, 56.35% in Saurashtra, 56.23% in North Gujarat and 75.14% in East-Central Gujarat. The state average was 75.74%. Only South Gujarat had no deficiency, with rainfall at 104.45% of its average.

While the Southwest Monsoon is in withdrawal mode in neighboring Rajasthan, a similar situation may develop in Gujarat in the coming days. However, more rainfall is expected in the latter part of September, according to veteran weather expert Ambalal Patel.

Patel’s forecasts often precede similar predictions issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which are released a few days later. He has also predicted cyclonic activity between October and December, mainly in November.

From 75.74% (688.37 mm) a week ago, Gujarat has now reached 88% of its average monsoon rainfall. It remains to be seen how much rainfall Gujarat records by the end of the 2026 monsoon season.
