8.9 kg hydroponic weed seized from Bangkok passenger at Ahmedabad airport

Ahmedabad: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department seized 8.913 kg of hydroponic cannabis, also known as marijuana or weed, from a passenger arriving from Bangkok at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in Ahmedabad.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the Customs team intercepted the passenger and conducted a detailed search of the check-in baggage. The search led to the recovery of the contraband, which had been concealed inside a trolley bag.

According to officials, the cannabis was packed in 14 specially prepared airtight packets and hidden between clothes inside the bag, allegedly to evade detection during airport security checks.

The Customs Department seized the contraband under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The passenger was detained and subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged smuggling attempt.

Officials have launched a detailed investigation to determine the source of the cannabis in Bangkok and identify the intended recipient of the consignment in Ahmedabad. The probe is also aimed at tracing possible links between the international drug supply chain and local distributors.

The seizure is part of the Customs Department’s efforts to curb international narcotics smuggling through Ahmedabad airport. DeshGujarat
