Gujarat Police files 18000 cases; seizes 4000 vehicles without number plates

Ahmedabad: With the aim of improving road safety and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations, the Gujarat Police is conducting a state-wide special drive from September 1 to October 14, 2026, against vehicles without number plates and those using tampered or non-compliant number plates.

Under the drive, a total of 18,014 cases were registered across Gujarat between September 1 and 20, while 4,187 vehicles were detained for number plate-related violations. Police also collected Rs 58.56 lakh in fines for traffic rule violations during the campaign.

The police are carrying out checks across districts and cities to identify vehicles operating in violation of number plate regulations and take necessary legal action. During the first 20 days of the drive, 1,786 cases were registered in Surat city, 1,959 in Vadodara city and 1,363 in Banaskantha.

V. Sahitya, SP of the State Traffic Branch, has appealed to motorists to ensure that their vehicles have number plates that are clear, visible and compliant with regulations. Number plates featuring fancy fonts, stylised designs or other modifications that obscure the registration number can attract fines and legal action.

The special drive will continue until October 14, with police expected to intensify enforcement against violators in the coming weeks. DeshGujarat
