RMC destroys 596 kg stale fruits, vegetables at Blinkit dark store; imposes fine

Rajkot: The Food Department of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) seized and destroyed 596 kg of rotten and unfit fruits and vegetables from a Blinkit dark store near Sadhu Vaswani Road during a surprise inspection.

The civic body’s food safety team inspected the facility and found the stock stale, unhygienic and unfit for human consumption.

Officials found approximately 596 kg of fruits and vegetables stored without labels, supplier or manufacturer details, or a “use by” date.

The entire stock was destroyed on-site using a tipper van from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Department. The operator of the facility was also fined ₹10,000 for violating food safety regulations.

The action comes amid growing reliance on quick-commerce platforms for the home delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables. The inspection has also raised concerns over the storage and handling of fresh produce before it reaches consumers.

The RMC said the action was taken after its food safety team determined that the stock was unfit for consumption and ensured its safe disposal. DeshGujarat
