Linde secures 8 acres land in Sanand to expand semiconductor gas manufacturing footprint

Ahmedabad: Looking to expand its manufacturing footprint in Gujarat, Linde India, a global industrial gases company, has acquired around eight acres of land in Sanand to set up a new facility, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Linde is already building an air separation unit (ASU) in Dholera to supply industrial gases to the upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility being developed by the Tata Group. The company also operates an air separation plant in Dahej and a packaged gases unit in Ahmedabad.

“We have secured about eight acres of land in Sanand, which is becoming a growth hub for semiconductor packaging units,” Linde India managing director Milan Sadhukhan was quoted as saying by ET.

According to the report, Linde has begun discussions with potential customers setting up semiconductor plants in Sanand. Sadhukhan said the discussions had been constructive and provided a foundation for future collaborations.

The company expects its Dholera air separation unit to be ready in the second half of 2027, Sadhukhan said.

Linde has not disclosed the investment planned for the Sanand facility. The company is also in discussions with the Gujarat government regarding incentives available under initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (ISM 2.0) and relevant state-level programmes, according to the ET report.

Industrial gases play a critical role in semiconductor manufacturing, where highly controlled chemical processes require gases at several stages of chip production. They are used in applications including thin-film deposition, material removal, chamber conditioning and cleaning of manufacturing equipment.

Semiconductor manufacturing uses gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, argon, helium, silane, ammonia, nitrogen trifluoride and tungsten hexafluoride, along with several specialty gases. These gases are supplied in highly controlled grades because even trace levels of moisture, particles or other contaminants can affect the manufacturing process. DeshGujarat
