Animal Feed Supplement Sold as Liv 52 Drops for Children in Surat; Medical Store Owner Held

Surat: Hundreds of children in Surat may have been given a veterinary supplement instead of a liver tonic meant for human consumption over the past year, in an alleged medical malpractice case that came to light following the arrest of a medical store owner.

The 45-year-old accused, Sajid Ibrahim Mulla, allegedly repackaged a liquid animal feed supplement into 60ml bottles labelled ‘Liv 52’ drops and sold them to parents.

Acting on specific intelligence, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) officials raided Shri Shantinath Medical Store, owned by Mulla, in Gopipura.

According to the FIR registered at Athwalines police station on Wednesday, the team seized a five-litre can of the veterinary supplement, several 60ml bottles labelled ‘Liv 52’ drops and bottles of other brands.

DCP Rajdeep Nakum said Mulla allegedly believed the supplement’s ingredients were similar to those in products given to children. Investigators found that he had prepared around 1,000 bottles over the past year and sold them to parents.

Police said Mulla bought a five-litre can for Rs 1,050 and sold the repackaged liquid in 60ml bottles for Rs 140 each. One can could yield about 83 bottles, generating Rs 11,620 in revenue if all were sold.

Investigators also found that the bottles carried stickers with dosage instructions for children, advising 10 to 20 drops three times daily as directed by a doctor. Nakum said the stickers were printed at a local photocopy shop.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to poisoning, negligent acts endangering human life, selling one drug as another and forgery. DeshGujarat
