Peak Power Demand in Gujarat Hits Record High of 29,822 MW

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s electricity demand has hit a record 29,822 MW, driven by rising industrial and commercial consumption, with power demand in October surpassing the peak levels recorded during the summer.

The state’s peak power demand increased significantly this year. In June, it ranged from 26,834 MW to 28,833 MW before reaching a record 29,822 MW in October. The trend indicates that high electricity demand is no longer limited to the summer months.

Gujarat recorded electricity consumption of 586 million units (MU) in June 2026, compared with 529 MU in June 2025, according to the data provided.

Officials attributed the rising demand to industrial expansion and a steady increase in household electricity consumption. Gujarat’s power demand registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 12% over the past five years and nearly 10% over the past three years.

Based on these trends, planners expect peak demand to increase by another 10% next year, potentially exceeding 32,500 MW in 2027.

To meet the growing demand, the state is seeking a larger allocation of electricity from the central grid and additional coal supplies.

Ashwini Kumar, principal secretary of the Energy and Petrochemicals Department, said the state government had initiated discussions with the Union power and coal ministries to address the anticipated supply gap.

“We have requested the power ministry to allocate a higher quota from the central grid, and we have also approached the coal ministry for additional coal,” Kumar said.
