Surat Police Invoke GUJCTOC Against Imran Mudi Gang; Six Held

Surat: Police have invoked the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organised Crime (GUJCTOC) Act against the notorious Imran Mudi gang, accused of terrorising residents of Surat’s Bhestan area through criminal activities ranging from intimidation to theft.

ACP Sunil Tarde said the action followed an incident on June 17, when Imran Mudi and his associates allegedly attacked people over a trivial issue in the Shalimar slum area of Bhestan. The gang leader allegedly attacked a person with a knife, causing serious injuries, and threatened to kill the victim.

According to police, the gang had been involved in several serious offences over an extended period, including murder, causing grievous injuries, theft and offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Fear of the gang had reportedly discouraged local residents from approaching the police to file complaints.

To curb the gang’s activities, police gathered evidence and submitted a report to the court seeking the addition of provisions of the GUJCTOC Act. The court accepted the report, cancelled the accused persons’ bail and issued warrants for their arrest, police said.

Bhestan police have arrested six accused, including gang leader Imran alias Mudi Shahabuddin Usmani, a resident of Shoaibnagar in Unn-Patia. The other arrested accused are Wahid Jazid Hasan Sheikh, Mehfuz alias Fodi, Mohammad Sahil alias Masum Ansari, Afsal alias Nipal and Toheb alias Junaid.

Another accused, Shabir alias Golden, is currently lodged in Lajpore Central Jail in connection with a separate murder case. Police are working to obtain a transfer warrant to take his custody. Efforts are also underway to arrest Shah Rukh alias Babdiya, who is absconding.

Police said several serious cases, including murder, offences under the Arms Act, and proceedings under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act and externment orders, have previously been registered against Imran Mudi. DeshGujarat
