CNG Car Blast in Vadodara; 5 Injured as Debris Flies 200 Metres

Vadodara: Five people were injured after a parked Honda City caught fire and its CNG cylinder exploded in the Navayard area early this morning, sending metal fragments flying up to 200 metres. The powerful blast shattered the car and damaged a nearby kiosk, while a metal fragment pierced the hand of one woman. All five injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred in the Ramwadi locality, where the car was parked. The fire reportedly broke out around 2 am, triggering panic among residents. Before the TP-13 fire brigade team could reach the spot, the CNG cylinder inside the vehicle exploded with a deafening bang, scattering debris across the surrounding streets and houses.

Five Injured as Metal Debris Hits Residents

The injured were identified as Deepikaben Makwana, Ushaben Makwana, Naginbhai Parmar, Savitaben Vaghela and Veenaben Parmar. A piece of the car’s metal body reportedly pierced a woman’s hand, while another person sustained a leg injury after being struck by flying debris. Police and ambulance teams rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to a hospital.

The blast also damaged a nearby kiosk belonging to a person with a disability. The fire reportedly destroyed three bicycles, chairs, snacks, chocolates and other items kept inside the kiosk. Metal fragments from the car were found scattered across the locality, with some reportedly reaching houses several rows away.

Gas Kit Allegedly Installed 15 Days Ago

According to local residents, the car belongs to Pritesh Makwana, who had reportedly installed a CNG kit in the vehicle around 15 days before the incident. Residents said it was unclear whether the kit had been installed by an authorised agency or an outside operator.

Locals also claimed they had previously requested the owner not to park the vehicle on the street, where children frequently play. The owner had reportedly told them that the car was parked temporarily while he took his father to the airport. A resident demanded that the owner bear the medical expenses of those injured in the incident.

Eyewitnesses Recount Moments Before Blast

Ushaben, one of the injured, said she stepped outside after noticing the car on fire. A young man was reportedly attempting to move the vehicle when she came out. Concerned about her child’s safety, she remained near the doorway before a sudden flare-up forced people to move away.

Another eyewitness, Paresh Prajapati, said the fire was noticed between 2 am and 2.15 am. His father had asked him to move vehicles parked near the burning car. While he was contacting another vehicle owner to clear the area, the CNG cylinder exploded, sending metal fragments flying in all directions.

Fire brigade personnel eventually brought the blaze under control after considerable effort. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and the subsequent explosion, including the circumstances surrounding the installation of the vehicle’s CNG kit. DeshGujarat
