Bhavnagar to Get Two New Overbridges

Bhavnagar: Bhavnagar is set to get two new overbridges to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion, with a ₹650 crore mega project planned between Nari Chokdi and Vartej and another bridge proposed at the Kumbharwada railway crossing.

State Government spokesperson and Bhavnagar West MLA Jitu Vaghani announced the projects, stating that the initiatives aim to provide smoother traffic movement, reduce commuting time and fuel consumption, and improve connectivity for residents, traders and daily commuters.

The Nari Chokdi–Vartej overbridge, described as the largest of its kind in Saurashtra, will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹650 crore. An online tender has already been floated for the project, which will be jointly implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the State Government’s Roads and Buildings Department, and the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation.

The proposed overbridge is expected to address persistent traffic congestion along the Nari Chokdi–Vartej stretch, a key entry and exit corridor of Bhavnagar city.

Separately, the state government and the Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation have decided to construct a new overbridge at the Kumbharwada railway crossing under the Centre’s Phatak Mukt Bharat initiative, aimed at eliminating railway level crossings.

The Kumbharwada crossing has long been a major commuting bottleneck for residents, workers, industrial establishments and traders in the area. Despite the construction of an underpass earlier, traffic-related problems have continued to affect commuters.

Vaghani, accompanied by the Mayor, Standing Committee Chairman, Deputy Mayor, ruling party leader and Municipal Commissioner, recently inspected the site to review the proposed project.

The bridge will feature a two-way design with separate sections for smooth entry and exit, facilitating uninterrupted traffic movement across the railway crossing.

The construction work is expected to begin after the completion of technical formalities. Once operational, the two projects are expected to significantly improve urban mobility in Bhavnagar and reduce travel time for commuters. DeshGujarat
