Gujarat Cabinet Approves Livestock Insurance Scheme for 1 Lakh Animals
November 04, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has approved a livestock insurance scheme covering 1 lakh animals under the National Livestock Mission, providing financial relief to livestock owners through insurance coverage of up to Rs 40,000 per animal for one year at a subsidised premium of just Rs 229.
Under the scheme, the state government will bear 85% of the insurance premium, amounting to approximately Rs 1,300 per animal, while livestock owners will pay the remaining 15%. The initiative aims to protect livestock owners against financial losses arising from unforeseen circumstances and encourage wider insurance coverage for their animals.
Minister Jitu Vaghani announced the decision during a cabinet briefing, stating that the scheme had been approved and that the first instalment of central assistance had also been received. The Centre has sanctioned Rs 2.50 crore for the project, while the state government will contribute approximately Rs 55 lakh towards livestock insurance assistance.
According to the minister, 87,147 applications have already been received through the i-Khedut portal. The government has urged livestock owners who have not yet enrolled to apply and avail themselves of the insurance benefits, as the scheme has a coverage limit of 1 lakh animals for the current year.
The initiative is expected to strengthen financial security for livestock owners and provide compensation in the event of unforeseen losses involving insured animals. DeshGujarat
