Gandhinagar: A total of 48 cases have so far been registered by the police across the state in connection with the ongoing violent protests against the Una Dalit atrocity incident in Gujarat, Additional In-charge Additional DGP (Law & Order) V M Pargi today said.

Mr Pargi said that one of the cases pertaining to the death of a policeman in stone pelting in Amreli was lodged under IPC 302.

‘Most of the remaining cases were under sections pertaining to rioting, arson, damage to public and private property. The places with maximum number of cases so far were Rajkot, Junagadh, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad,’ the Additional DGP said.

He said that most of the cases were lodged against a crowd of 50 to 100 people. Thus making the estimated total number of accused in all the cases lodged so far, together, anywhere between 3000 to 5000.

We have made only a few arrests so far, he added.

Mr Pargi said that the Ahmedabad police has clubbed all the protest violence related case together.

He also said that there were some more cases of violence reported during the protest today including burning of three ST buses in Mahesana district, violent protest in Limbadi and some other parts of Surendranagar and parts of Saurashtra.

Notably, police has lodged cases against around 350 people in connection with the violence and stone pelting and defiance of administrative order in Amraivadi, Chandkheda and Kalupur areas of Ahmedabd city. Today a case of damage to public property and rioting against a crowd of 300 was lodged in Dholka town of Ahmedabad district where a rally of protestors turned violent and attacked the police and the local seva sadan.
