June 21, 2019
By staff writer, Gandhinagar: Sabarmati jail is a historic place where many prominent freedom fighters of India’s independence struggle were jailed by then ruling Britishers prior to year 1947. Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Balgangadhar Lokmanya Tilak were among those freedom fighters who spent time in Sabarmati central prison. While all three jail rooms where these three dignitaries were jailed have been preserved in their memories, the other two rooms where ‘Rashtriya Shayar’ (national poet) Zaverchand Meghani and Gujarat’s tallest social worker Pujya Ravishankar Maharaj (who inaugurated Gujarat State on 1st May 1960 at Gandhi Ashram) were kept were today declared ‘Smriti Kutir’. Both rooms where Meghani and Ravishankar Maharaj were kept are now preserved in their memories. Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja inaugurated these two ‘Smriti Kutirs’ during his visit to jail premises today. Jadeja paid floral tributes to dignitaries in ‘Smriti Kutirs’.
