Suzuki Motor to set up new EV vehicle and batteries plant in Gujarat; MoU inked also for dismantling and recycling

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has signed a Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Japan headquartered Suzuki Motor for Rs. 10,000 crore EV battery and vehicle plant in Gujarat and also for scrap dismantling and recycling facility.
Speaking to DeshGujarat, the Finance Minister of Gujarat Shri Kanubhai Desai who was present at the MoU ceremony on Saturday, March 19 in New Delhi said the MoU is signed for Rs. 10,000 crore electric vehicle and battery plant of Suzuki Motor in Gujarat. He said another MoU was signed for dismantling and recycling of old vehicles in the backdrop of scrap policy.
The new plant may come up at Ughroj near Mandal adjacent to Japan Industrial township where Suzuki Motor is already in possession of sufficient land. The existing plant at Bechraji is already full of its capacity and can’t expand further at same location.
Meanwhile, a report by Nikkei suggests that Suzuki Motor Corp is planning to invest upto 150 billion yen ($1.26 billion / Rs 9,561 crore) to build a new factory in Gujarat to make EV batteries by 2026. After battery and Nexa lines cars, the Mandal Becharaji area of Gujarat is the new hub for Suzuki to churn out new tech and stay ahead of the curve. The Nikkei report further states that Suzuki, over the course of five years, intends to spend a total of 2.2 trillion yen on R&D and capital investment. Of the total, about 1 trillion yen will go for R&D, most of which will be earmarked for development of EVs. The company is expected to roll out affordable EV models in India as well as Japan.
