Ahmedabad: In a first such instance here in the city, a road has been named in honor of a traditional garba. The Wadigam Pol in Dariapur will now be called “Wadigam Heritage Garba Marg.”
Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) named the road from Sri Neelkanth Mahadev to Saraswati Library in Wadigam in Dariyapur Ward of Central Zone as “Wadigam Heritage Garba Marg”. The plaque bearing this name was unveiled on October 11 by the Mayor Pratibha Jain.
The decision to rename the road was taken by the town planning committee in October of the previous year. It’s worth noting that the garba performed at this traditional pol has received the Mayor’s competition award on two occasions.
Another heritage garba of significance in Ahmedabad is the “Sadu Mata Ni Pol Garba” in Shahpur. On the eighth day of Navratri, men from this neighborhood participate in garba, dressed as women, as a means of expiating a curse.
