Jalaram Jayanti, dedicated to honoring the revered Hindu saint Jalaram Bapa, is a significant event observed on the seventh day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartak. This year, as per the Gujarati Calendar of Vikram Samvat 2080, Jalaram Jayanti 2023 falls on November 19th.

The birth anniversary of Jalaram Bapa is celebrated as per the Hindu calendar, according to which he was born on Kartak Sud Satam. This year, the Jayanti is being celebrated just a day after Labh Pancham due to the merger of Satam and Chath tithi, which falls on November 19th.

Interestingly, as per the English calendar, he was born on November 4, 1799, in Virpur, Gujarat. Bapa withdrew from worldly pursuits at the age of 18 to become the disciple of Bhoja Bhagat of Fatehpur. His teachings and miracles have left an indelible mark, reaching every corner of the nation.

Jalaram Bapa’s life was marked by selfless service and devotion. He initiated the Sadavrat feeding center, offering free meals to sadhus, saints, and those in need. The miraculous aspect was the inexhaustible nature of his grain stores.

Jalaram Bapa’s teachings transcended religious boundaries. His disciples included not only Hindus but also Muslims, who followed him with unwavering devotion.

A major saint of the Swaminarayan Sampraday in Virpur was profoundly impressed by Jalaram Bapa, blessing him with a prominent pilgrimage site. This site continues to draw pilgrims seeking spiritual solace.

Celebrations

The tradition of Sada Vrat, a mass feeding initiative started by Shri Jalaram, continues to be practiced by his devoted followers worldwide. The saint’s birth anniversary is widely celebrated in Saurashtra, with nearly 2 lakh people visiting the Jalaram Mandir in Virpur.

The main highlight of the day is the distribution of food, including approximately 20 tonnes of sweets, 8 tonnes of Ganthiya, 20 tonnes of vegetables, 4,500 kg of Dal, and 7,500 kg of rice by the Mandir administration to visitors. Additionally, all Jalaram Temples engage in providing free clothing, literature, fruits, and various other items to the less fortunate.

The spirit of Jalaram Jayanti extends to various towns, including Bilkha, Keshod, Tankara, Dhoraji, Mangrol, Khambhaliya, Porbandar, Kunkavav, Babra, Upleta, Savarkundla, Una, Kutiyana, Rajula, Madhavpur, Kalyanpur, Bhatiya, and Dharmaj, where the celebration is embraced with fervor.
