Prolonged closure of Surat Millennium 2 Market hits 500 crore business, shopkeepers protest

Surat: Shopkeepers and labourers at Millennium 2 Market in Bhatena, Surat, are distressed by the continued closure of the market by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The closure initiated ten days ago due to fire safety concerns, has led to protests as shops remain sealed despite completing required rectifications.

Shopkeepers claim there has been no action despite assurances from the municipality to reopen the market after necessary modifications. This delay comes at a critical time as preparations for the upcoming Diwali season are underway. The closure of ten days has impacted the market with an estimated business loss of 500 crores.

The market has 660 shops catering to many customers, including businessmen from other states. There has been a decline in footfall and trade activities. The prolonged closure not only affects business turnover but also disrupts employment for temporary workers, porters, and retail staff.

Shopkeepers argue that the market’s closure was met with urgency, but the reopening process has been slow. As a result, the traders are protesting outside Millennium 2 Market, demanding immediate action from the SMC to reopen the shops and restore normal business operations. DeshGujarat
