Power Banks: Most seized item in check-in luggage at Ahmedabad Airport; Here’s how to carry them

Ahmedabad: Power banks can be lifesavers when your device’s battery is about to die, but they can also lead to a physical baggage check if carried inside check-in luggage while doing air travel. At Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in the city, power banks were the most frequently found restricted items in checked-in baggage, with 18,146 units detected over the past year.

Managed by Adani Airport Holdings, the airport security screened 46 lakh bags between September 2023 and August 2024, with 80,000 bags flagged for physical checks due to items such as spare batteries, lighters, and e-cigarettes.

During Aviation Security Culture Week (August 5-11), the airport launched initiatives under the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to enhance passenger awareness of security protocols. “These efforts aim to streamline security checks and reduce passenger delays by increasing awareness of baggage regulations,” said the airport operator.

How to Carry a Power Bank While Traveling by Air:

Power banks have become an essential travel accessory, providing convenient on-the-go charging for smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices. However, when it comes to air travel, passengers need to be aware of strict regulations regarding the transportation of power banks. Due to their lithium-ion batteries, which can pose a fire hazard under certain conditions, power banks are generally prohibited in checked-in baggage. Airlines require passengers to carry them in their hand luggage, where any potential issues can be more easily managed.

The capacity of the power bank also plays a crucial role in determining whether it can be taken on board. Most airlines allow power banks with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) without any special approval. For power banks between 100Wh and 160Wh, passengers typically need airline approval, while those exceeding 160Wh are often banned entirely. It’s important for travelers to check with their airline’s specific guidelines to avoid any last-minute surprises at the airport.

Placing power banks in hand luggage, checking their capacity in advance, and being aware of any additional airline-specific rules can help streamline the security screening process. By adhering to these regulations, travelers can ensure both their safety and convenience during air travel. DeshGujarat
