Ahmedabad Inches Forward in India’s Metro Rail Race

Gandhinagar: With its metro rail system stretching 58.66 kilometers, Ahmedabad has secured the sixth position in India’s growing network of urban transit systems. The updated statistics of metro rail systems in India reveal Ahmedabad’s metro is just a fraction shorter than Kolkata’s 58.68 kilometers, reflecting its competitive position among major Indian cities.

The Ahmedabad Metro, which aims to streamline urban commuting, is playing a significant role in enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The current operational length includes both the North-South and East-West corridors, serving thousands of commuters daily and contributing to the city’s development. The works for completion of phase-2 in Gandhinagar are underway, while in the Ahmedabad, another length in Metro route shall be added by extending the route to Thaltej gam.

India’s Expanding Metro Footprint

Delhi continues to dominate with a staggering 351.2 kilometers of operational metro rail, far ahead of other cities. Bengaluru (76.95 km), Hyderabad (67 km), and Mumbai (59 km) follow in the rankings. Despite being new to the metro race, Ahmedabad’s ambitious projects and rapid execution have brought it close to some of the more established systems.

India’s total operational metro length now stands at 966 kilometers, while an additional 656 kilometers are under construction across the country. This growth underscores the importance of metro systems in addressing urban congestion and pollution challenges.
