Chandrabhaga canal refurbishment proposal gets AMC nod

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a proposal to renovate the Chandrabhaga canal from Prabodh Rawal Bridge to Kaligam Underpass in the Ranip ward. Phase 1 of this project, estimated at ₹151.75 crore, involves constructing RCC boxes, retaining walls, and a 1200mm stormwater drainage line along this 2-kilometer stretch. A separate tender worth ₹50.97 crore has been issued to extend the refurbishment to the Sabarmati section in Phase 2.

The canal, passing through areas like Sabarmati Railway Colony, Kaligam, Ranip Bakramandi, and Jalvihar STP, has long suffered from pollution due to sewage discharge, raising health concerns for nearby residents. After the long-pending demand of local corporators and the MLA, AMC conducted a detailed survey and proposed the development plan.

Following the survey of the canal section between Kaligam and Prabodh Rawal Bridge, the estimated development cost was ₹146.32 crore, against which a proposal for ₹151.75 crore was approved.

In the first phase, the canal segment from Prabodh Rawal Bridge to Kaligam will be upgraded with a stormwater drainage system. The second phase will focus on renovating the stretch from Jawahar Chowk to Saat Garnala in Sabarmati, with a tender worth ₹50.97 crore already issued. DeshGujarat
