Ahmedabad: After a meeting between top police officials and the Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, the city police launched a city-wide police combing operation. The operation involved checking 21,223 vehicles, including 3,111 two-wheelers, and was led by zonal DCPs along with teams of 30-50 personnel. It resulted in the seizure of 199 weapons under the Gujarat Police Act, including Rambo knives, swords, and other sharp-edged instruments. In total, 1,791 vehicles were detained, and 375 arrests were made for public intoxication, with 111 arrests occurring in Zone 1, which covers the city’s wealthier areas. The police also conducted checks at hotels, dhabas, and other accommodations on the outskirts of the city.
Additionally, 58 burglars were apprehended, and 1,266 vehicles were fined for Motor Vehicles Act violations, including the use of illegal LED headlights. A total of 1,390 e-challans were issued, amounting to ₹12.82 lakh. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sharad Singhal confirmed that 57 vital installations and 183 rented premises were inspected, leading to 34 arrests of serious offenders, including parole violators. He stated that such surprise checks would become routine.
The operation was prompted by two recent murders: the fatal shooting of a vegetable trader in Nehrunagar by contract killers and the stabbing of a youth in Kagdapith. These incidents led to the suspension of two police inspectors. DeshGujarat
