Another brawl between Ahmedabad airport security and auto-taxi drivers; 5 injured
January 08, 2025
Ahmedabad: A late-night brawl erupted on Monday between airport security personnel and autorickshaw & taxi drivers outside the domestic arrivals terminal of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in the city.
The conflict began around 10:30 pm when security officials attempted to prevent autorickshaw drivers and cab operators from soliciting passengers. Reports indicate that some drivers responded with verbal abuse and physical aggression. As the situation worsened, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) intervened to restore order.
A cab driver, Navin Harvani, alleged in a complaint that a security guard hit him on the head with a pipe, causing injuries. Harvani also claimed that at least five autorickshaw drivers were assaulted during the incident. The police have booked two identified individuals and other unidentified suspects under sections 118(1), 115(2), 54, and 135(1) of the Gujarat Police Act.
On the other hand, the spokesperson for SVPI Airport stated, “In the late hours of January 6, 2025, touts and transport providers caused disruptions in the arrivals area, leading to physical altercations and injuries. The matter is under investigation, and airport operations remain unaffected.”
Touting has been a recurring issue at the airport, often resulting in conflicts between drivers and security personnel. Airport security agencies have filed several complaints and four FIRs in the past regarding the problem. This is another such incident. DeshGujarat
