Vadodara: In a significant move to prevent future flooding, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has from today morning commenced a large-scale dredging project at Ajwa and Pratapura reservoirs. The initiative, launched on Tuesday, aims to increase the water storage capacity of these crucial water bodies before the onset of the monsoon season.

The project, part of the broader Vishwamitri River Redevelopment Project, was inaugurated with a formal ceremony at Ajwa Lake near Rampura village. The ambitious plan involves deepening Ajwa Lake by two meters and Pratapura Lake by six to eight meters. This will result in the removal of approximately 50 lakh cubic meters of soil, significantly enhancing the lakes’ ability to hold water and reduce the risk of flooding in the city. A new pond will also be created at Pratapura Lake.

Increased Storage Capacity and Flood Prevention:

The dredging is expected to boost the combined water storage capacity of the two lakes by 200 cumecs. This increased capacity will be crucial in managing excess rainwater during the monsoon season and preventing the Vishwamitri River, which flows through the city, from overflowing. The river, originating from Pavagadh and traversing 20 kilometers through Vadodara, has been a source of recurring flood concerns.

The VMC has engaged seven agencies to carry out the dredging work, with each agency responsible for transporting the excavated soil. On the first day, 50 dumpers, 10 JCBs, and 15 Pokland machines were deployed. The project is targeted for completion before the monsoon arrives.

Simultaneous Dredging of Other Lakes:

In addition to Ajwa and Pratapura, the VMC is also dredging Ramnath and Vas lakes. This work, which began on Shivratri, involves deepening both lakes by two meters. Approximately 1.30 lakh cubic meters of soil will be removed from these two lakes, increasing their combined water storage capacity by 13 crore liters. The dredging of Ramnath and Vas lakes is expected to be completed by May 30th.

Addressing Past Flood Devastation:

The urgency of the dredging project is underscored by the devastating floods that Vadodara experienced during the previous monsoon. The Vishwamitri River’s flooding caused significant damage and disruption, highlighting the need for comprehensive flood mitigation measures.

24-Hour Operations if Needed:

The VMC has stated that it is prepared to operate the dredging project 24 hours a day if necessary to meet the pre-monsoon deadline.
