Gujarat Science City to Unveil New Astronomy and Space Science Gallery on May 15th

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Science City is set to expand its array of attractions with the launch of a new “Astronomy and Space Science Gallery,” scheduled to open its doors to the public on Thursday, May 15, 2025. This new addition aims to offer visitors an immersive and educational journey through the cosmos.

Operating under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, Science City has become a popular destination for all age groups. The new gallery, themed around the solar system and beyond, is anticipated to be a significant draw, especially for students and families during the current vacation period.

Principal Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Shri Mona Khandhar, stated, “After the grand success of the Aquarium and Robotic Gallery, the third Astronomy and Space Gallery will be opened for visitors. India’s special contribution has been shown in this gallery.”

She added that the Chief Minister instructed the gallery to be opened on May 15th to allow a large number of students and parents to benefit from it during their holidays. Special activities and a 3D film have also been organized for students.

The impressive gallery spans a total area of 12,797 square meters. Its centerpiece is a massive, three-story high globe representing the Sun, with other planets arranged around it. The three-story structure is divided into six main sections. The “Fundamentals and History” section houses 47 exhibits detailing basic astronomical principles and historical developments. The “Present Gallery” features approximately 30 exhibits on current space missions and related discoveries, while the “Future Gallery” looks ahead with 24 exhibits focused on future research prospects.

A dedicated section highlights India’s contributions to astronomy and space science through 32 different exhibits. Visitors can also explore the “Stellar Gallery,” which includes 8 exhibits explaining the formation of various stars and constellations, and experience a virtual journey through space in the “Virtual Reality Gallery” with its 4 exhibits. Additionally, four atrium-based and six outdoor installations are designed to provide unique experiences.

Key Features of the Astronomy and Space Science Gallery:

  • Hybrid Dome Planetarium: A state-of-the-art planetarium with a seating capacity of 172, described as the only high planetarium in the country.
  • Observatory Dome: Equipped with a 24-inch telescope offering 360-degree viewing capabilities and advanced astrophotography equipment.
  • Mechanical Orrery: The world’s largest mechanical orrery, with a diameter of 6.5 meters, demonstrating the movement of the planets.
