New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked this morning during her weekly Jan Sunvai (public hearing) at her Civil Lines residence. According to the Delhi CMO, a man attempted to assault the CM while she was interacting with citizens.
“The accused has been apprehended by Delhi Police and is being questioned,” the CMO said. As per initial information, the accused identified himself as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old man claiming to be a resident of Rajkot. Police are verifying his details with Gujarat authorities.
During the incident, the accused reportedly approached the CM with documents and tried to pull her towards him, leading to minor jostling. Following the scuffle, CM Gupta was taken to a hospital for a medical examination. As per reports, the accused had come to file a petition for the release of his relative, who is lodged in Tihar Jail.
Speaking to the media about the incident, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva said: “This morning, during the public hearing, the Chief Minister was interacting with the public as usual. A person came forward, handed her some papers, and suddenly tried to pull her by holding her hand. There was some pushing and shoving before people caught hold of him. The police are investigating who he is and other details. The Chief Minister’s condition is stable. Doctors have examined her. I have met her—she is a strong woman. It appears she has suffered a minor head injury. Such incidents in politics are reprehensible. Public hearings will continue as usual.”
According to an eyewitness, the CM appeared “completely in shock.” Shailendra Kumar, who had come to raise a sewer-related grievance, said chaos broke out at the gate when the attempted assault occurred.
Condemning the incident, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said: “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?”
Meanwhile, it has also come to light that five cases of fighting and prohibition have been registered against Rajesh, in which he has been acquitted in four, while one case is still pending.
Rajesh’s mother, Bhanuben Khimjibhai Sakaria, said he became agitated after watching news reports about stray dogs in Delhi. “He would beat his hands on the settee whenever he saw such news. Last Sunday, he left home saying he was going to Ujjain. When we called yesterday, he said he had come to Delhi for the dog and hung up,” she said. She added that Rajesh is married and has a son.
She further explained that Rajesh is fond of dogs, cows, and birds, and would feed stray animals leftover bread. Although he had a habit of drinking, he quit alcohol about five years ago but continued to show violent behavior at home. He earned a living by driving a rickshaw and often spoke about opening an animal hospital in Rajkot. DeshGujarat
