Surat: In a major action against child labor, the district task force has rescued one child and five teenage workers from a saree folding factory in the Godadara area of Surat district.
The joint raid at the saree folding factory in Godadara saw collaboration with the Labour Commissioner, Assistant Labour Officer, officials from Surat Municipal Corporation, factory inspectors, the District Child Protection Unit, the Prayas team, and other departmental authorities.
All the rescued children and teenagers were found to be residents of Udaipur district, Rajasthan. They had been working in the factory for the past two months, handling saree folding tasks. According to the task force, the children and young workers were made to work up to 12 hours a day, receiving a meager wage of only Rs. 9,000 to 10,000 per month. The prolonged working hours adversely affected both their health and education.
Following the orders of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), all the rescued children have been sent to the V.R. Popawala Child Labour Ashram, where they are receiving initial care and health check-ups. The task force stated that after verifying the necessary documents of the children, legal action will be taken against the factory owners and those responsible for the exploitation. DeshGujarat
