Gujarat DGP gets NHRC notice over ‘police torture’ of 17-year-old in Rajkot
October 16, 2025
Rajkot: Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports alleging that a 17-year-old boy was tortured in police custody at the Gandhigram Police Station in Rajkot on 1 September 2025, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Gujarat.
The incident reportedly came to light on 6 October 2025 after a video of the alleged torture surfaced on social media. The Commission noted that the contents of the media reports, if true, indicate a serious human rights violation. It has therefore sought a detailed report from the Director General of Police within two weeks.
According to the media report published on 7 October 2025, the video shows an officer pulling the boy’s hair while other police personnel can be seen laughing. On the night of 1 September 2025, the minor was taken into custody in connection with a stabbing incident that occurred the previous day. The boy and his associates were later presented before a juvenile court, which remanded him to a juvenile detention center. He was released on bail approximately two weeks later. DeshGujarat
