720-ton girder launched on under-construction railway overbridge in Sachin
October 18, 2025
Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is constructing a new railway overbridge at Satwalla Bridge Circle on National Highway 53, connecting Surat, Sachin, and Navsari. On Thursday, a 720-ton box-string girder was successfully launched on the under-construction railway overbridge. The municipal authorities completed the entire operation in approximately two and a half hours during a “mega block” requested from DFCC.
City commuters use the Satwalla overbridge to travel from Surat to Navsari, but increasing traffic congestion has caused significant difficulties. To address this, the municipality has been constructing the new railway overbridge. However, due to a new railway line being laid by DFCC, approval for installing the bridge’s pillars had not been granted.
To overcome this, a 76.04-meter-long span with a box-string girder (steel structure) was fabricated. Approval for a mega block from DFCC was obtained to facilitate the girder launch. Once permitted, the 76.04-meter-long girder, weighing 720 tons, was successfully positioned on the overbridge between 10:55 am and 1:25 pm on Thursday.
Once completed, the overbridge is expected to significantly ease traffic in the surrounding areas, saving time for commuters from Navsari Road, Palsana, Budiya, and Unn areas. DeshGujarat
