Surat: The city Crime Branch police have arrested an Afghan national, Mohammad Amir Javed Khan (42), for allegedly obtaining an Indian passport and other official documents using forged papers. The accused, originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, was living in the Jahangirpura area of Surat and was trading clothes across several Indian states, including Delhi and Maharashtra.
According to police, Mohammad Amir came to India in 2018 on a one-year visitor visa. After obtaining a refugee card from the UNHCR, he allegedly conspired with a friend from Jalna, Maharashtra, to create fake documents claiming Indian citizenship. A false birth certificate was made in Jalna, suggesting that he was born on 4 June 1983, based on which he obtained an Indian passport, Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID.
DCP Bhavesh Rozia said, “Using this bogus passport, he had travelled to the UAE twice and once from the UAE to Afghanistan. In Surat, he was involved in the textile business in the wholesale market and was trading clothes in states including Delhi and Maharashtra. After his arrest, he stated that before 2018, he was working as an agricultural labourer in Kabul, Afghanistan. However, with the help of bogus documents, he became a textile trader in India.”
A case has been registered at Chowk Bazaar Police Station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Section 12(1) of the Indian Passport Act, 1967. While Mohammad Amir has been arrested, his accomplice, identified as Aghajan, remains absconding.
The police are investigating the true motive behind Mohammad Amir’s stay in Surat and are tracing all individuals involved in the forgery. DeshGujarat
