Ahmedabad: The city is set to get a major iconic road designed to be both pollution-free and free from traffic congestion, while offering a high-end, garden-themed urban experience. The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to develop a 3.5-kilometre stretch from Visat Circle in Chandkheda to Tapovan Circle as an ‘Urban Lungs Road’. The project is designed not only to facilitate traffic movement but also to act as the city’s green lungs by improving environmental quality.

Planned with a right of way ranging from 90 metres to 108 metres, the iconic road will feature extensive greenery, sculptures, and landscaped zones. A 4-metre-wide central green median with sculptural trees and plantations will be developed, along with green buffer zones on both sides. Around 1,200 existing trees will be preserved, while large-scale plantation will be undertaken across nearly 81,500 square metres.

Key features of the project include a 3.5-metre-wide jogging track, seating areas, food kiosks, plazas, and recreational zones. A dedicated 2.1-metre-wide cycling track will be developed on both sides along the service lanes. The design also incorporates 7-metre-wide service roads, a minimum 2-metre-wide footpath along property lines with plantation at every five metres, junction improvements, theme-based road design, modern lighting, signage, street furniture, and facilities suitable for persons with disabilities.

Envisioned as a seamless green corridor between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, the project follows a zero-pollution and zero-traffic concept with a geometric design.
