Union Cabinet Approves Rs. 1071 crore Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar Metro – Phase 2B
February 24, 2026
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the Rs 1,017 crore Phase 2B project of the Ahmedabad Metro, which provides for laying an extension Metro rail line from GIFT City to the Shahpur stretch.
The project involves the expansion of the North–South corridor of the Ahmedabad Metro and aims to further strengthen connectivity between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
A new 3.3 km-long metro line will have three new elevated stations. The project duration is four years. With the completion of this line, the Metro network in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar will cross a length of 71 km.
The three new stations on the extended route shall be GIFT City House, Gujarat Biotechnology University and Shahpur, which shall be close to the way to IIT Gandhinagar.
It is worth noting that presently the Metro station of GIFT City is located away from the core active area of GIFT City, where various office buildings, GIFT City Club, GIFT City House, banks, the SEZ area, and financial institutions are located. The new route will bring the Metro train right to the core active area and also serve further locations ahead such as Gujarat Biotechnology University and Shahpur.
Key Benefits of the Extension
The project will provide a direct and seamless metro connection to GIFT City, with interchanges at GNLU and Old High Court stations.
It will enhance connectivity to the upcoming multimodal transportation hub at Sabarmati.
The extension will significantly strengthen transit connectivity between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region.
Several multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial centres located along the proposed route are expected to benefit directly.
GIFT City is India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and serves as a major financial and business hub. DeshGujarat
