Petrol Pump Licence Suspended, Case Filed Against Rajkot Dealers Association Chief

Rajkot: Rumours of petrol and diesel shortage triggered panic buying across Gujarat, including Rajkot, leading to long queues at fuel stations on Monday. The situation escalated after a statement by Rajkot Petrol Pump Dealers Association president Gopal Chudasama, prompting action by oil companies and authorities.

An Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) official filed a complaint against Chudasama for allegedly spreading rumours, and the licence of an HPCL petrol pump owned by him was suspended within 24 hours of the case being registered.

The confusion grew on Monday after Chudasama told the media that petrol pumps were running dry, following a meeting of petroleum dealers with oil company officials. As the news spread, people rushed to petrol pumps across the state fearing a shortage, resulting in heavy rush and chaos, with many waiting in queues for hours despite no immediate need for fuel.

The state government later clarified that there was no shortage. Additional Chief Secretary (Supply) Mona Khandhar said adequate buffer stock of petrol and diesel was available in Gujarat and there was no reason for panic.

Police registered a complaint against Chudasama under provisions including the Essential Commodities Act for making statements that led to the spread of rumours. The suspension of his petrol pump licence by HPCL was confirmed by Mehul Patel, president of the Federation of Gujarat Petroleum Dealers Association, and officials of the district administration.
