Vyara: A controversy has erupted in Gujarat after activist Kajal Hindustani questioned the religious identity of BJP MLA from the Vyara Assembly seat, Mohan Kokani, following a housewarming ceremony at his residence in Vyara that allegedly involved Christian rituals performed by a pastor.

The controversy began after photos and videos of the griha pravesh ceremony at the MLA’s residence surfaced online, showing a pastor conducting prayers. Hindustani raised objections on social media, asking whether the MLA identifies as a Christian or as a tribal Hindu, and questioned his eligibility to contest from a Scheduled Tribe reserved seat in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections.

In a post on X two days ago, Hindustani wrote, “Gujarat’s #Vyara MLA #Mohan_Konkani should tell the people of Gujarat which religion he follows. Is the BJP MLA ‘Mohan Konkani’ #Christian? Or is he a #Tribal Hindu? If he is #Christian, then why did he file his election nomination in 2022 from a ‘Reserved Tribal Seat’? And if he is a ‘Tribal Hindu,’ then why did he perform the housewarming puja by calling a #priest and following Christian rites?”

Tagging Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and State BJP chief Jagdish Vishwakarma, she added, “The people of Gujarat and the Tribal Hindu community request you to please set up an investigation committee on this matter.”

“An investigation should be conducted into whether Mohan Konkani is a Tribal Hindu or Christian. Has he filled in false details in his election nomination form? And did he contest the election from the Tribal reserved seat even though he follows the Christian faith? (Proof of which is in this post — video and photo attached),” the tweet further said, tagging the Election Commission of India.

Responding to the allegations, MLA Mohan Kokani denied any wrongdoing and said he belongs to the tribal community and respects all religions. He stated that inviting a pastor to offer prayers at his home was a personal matter and that he has the right to invite religious leaders from any faith.

Addressing Hindustani’s post, the MLA remarked that she should focus on her own matters rather than interfering in his personal faith and traditions.

Following this, Kajal Hindustani again took to social media today and said, “Gujarat’s tribal community MLA ‘Mohan Konkani’ is offering clarification on inviting a Christian priest to his housewarming puja, stating that this is a matter of his faith — he can invite a priest, and he can also invite a Brahmin; it’s his personal matter. MLA ji, first things first: when you’re in ‘public life,’ nothing about you is personal anymore. You are the representative of Tapi’s people and the tribal Hindu society. (You contested the election from a reserved tribal seat.) You’ve conducted your housewarming puja ritual according to the Christian religion, which clearly shows that your belief lies in #Christianity.”

“As for your argument that whether you invite a Brahmin or a priest is up to your wish, Then listen, MLA ji — if you’d invited a Brahmin, the public wouldn’t even be questioning you. You didn’t invite a Brahmin, did you, MLA ji? By the way, you’ve forgotten, MLA ji, that the very Christians you invited to perform your housewarming puja were the ones (the Britishers) against whom the tribal society’s ‘Lord Birsa Munda ji’ waged war,” she added.

“There’s nothing wrong with following any religion; the Constitution permits it. It’s wrong only when, while calling yourself a tribal, you worship #Mary and #Jesus instead of #Nature, and your family’s festivals are also conducted according to Christian rites — then doubts arise among Gujarat’s people about you, which is only natural,” the tweet further said.
