PSI, Woman Friend Injured in Gun Firing Inside Flat in Rajkot

Rajkot: In an alleged accidental firing incident late on Monday night, a police sub-inspector and his woman friend were injured after a single bullet struck both of them while the officer was reportedly handling his service weapon.

As per the police, the incident took place at the residence of Sub-Inspector Nitin K Pandya in Samanvay Apartment. Recently transferred from the Gandhigram-2 (University) police station to the cybercrime unit, Pandya was preparing to return his service weapon, as it was no longer required for his new posting.

According to police, the mishap occurred while the PSI was allegedly attempting to unload the firearm, which accidentally discharged.

The bullet passed through his upper right arm, fracturing the humerus bone and damaging surrounding muscles. After exiting his arm, it struck a woman friend standing nearby, hitting her in the waist and getting lodged inside her body.

In a surprising turn, the woman initially remained unaware that she had been shot. It was only after reaching Giriraj Hospital for treatment of the officer’s injury that her wound was detected. Doctors later confirmed that while the bullet had entered her body, there was no exit wound.

Both individuals underwent emergency surgery and are currently reported to be in stable condition.

Police officials were informed about the incident on Tuesday morning. A diary entry has been recorded, and an internal probe is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances of the accidental discharge. Authorities have, however, ruled out any foul play at this stage. DeshGujarat
