Ahmedabad: Driven by fuel shortage concerns amid the West Asia crisis and a rush to avail expiring tax benefits, electric vehicle (EV) sales in Gujarat surged 75.5% year-on-year in March, with registrations of pure EVs more than doubling.

According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Gujarat recorded 12,729 EV sales in March 2026, up from 7,252 units in March 2025. Of these, 11,126 were pure EVs, compared to 5,271 a year earlier, marking a 111% jump in pure EV sales.

Industry stakeholders attribute the surge to improved affordability, continued policy support, and shifting consumer preferences. Demand has risen sharply across both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, with some regions reporting spikes of up to 100%. Month-on-month sales in March nearly doubled.

The state government has extended RTO-linked tax incentives for EVs until March 31, 2027, revising the earlier deadline of March 31, 2026. The move is expected to further accelerate EV adoption across the state.

The extension of tax incentives under the Gujarat Motor Vehicles Tax Act is expected to keep upfront costs low, a key factor in a price-sensitive market. Although the state withdrew direct subsidies in 2024, central schemes and local incentives such as municipal tax rebates continue to support adoption.

Electric two-wheelers remain the dominant segment due to affordability and daily usability, while electric passenger vehicles are gaining traction among affluent buyers and fleet operators seeking to hedge against fuel price volatility. DeshGujarat
