Ahmedabad, 19 May 2014
The assembly segment wise results of Lok Sabha elections are useful to get access to the ground situation of political party. The questions such as which party unit actually performed well, and where did the party actually fail to bring results, are answered by detailed results of Lok Sabha. It is not necessary that particular assembly segment that voted particular party in Lok Sabha election will vote for same party in assembly election too. Look at this sheet, and take an example of Abdasa which was witnessing Lok Sabha and assembly polls together on same day, but while in assembly by-poll people voted Congress, the same people voted BJP candidate in Lok Sabha. Ditto in Visavdar and other places.
The Congress party has won less than 10% Lok Sabha seats and as per the rule, the party is therefore not suitable to get the post of the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha.
If we analyze the assembly seat wise results of the Lok Sabha general elections 2014 in Gujarat, the Congress party is in ditto same condition. Gujarat has 182 MLAs and in Lok Sabha polls, the Congress party couldn’t ensure victory over even 10% seats. Congress was ahead of BJP on only 17 assembly seats.
-Danta(ST)
-Khedbrahma(ST)
-Bhiloda(ST)
-Jamalpur-Khadia
-Danilimda(SC)
-Wankaner (just marginally)
-Jasdan
-Anklav(Anand)
-Borsad
-Petlad
-Thasra (Ramsinh Parmar)
-Balasinor
-Dahod(ST)
-Chhota Udaipur
-Mandvi(ST)
-Vyara(ST)
-Nizar(ST)
This means, even amid massive nation-wide pro-Modi tsunami, there were 17 assembly segments in Gujarat in which more people voted for Congress candidate compared to BJP candidate. There are several reasons responsible for this.
Danta is traditionally pro-Congress bastion. Khedbrahma and Bhiloda both seats have locally strong Congress MLAs. Wankaner, Danilimda and Jamalpur-Khadia have good number of Muslim voters. Of these three, Jamalpur-Khadia only has BJP MLA due to split in vote between Congress’s official candidate and rebel candidate. Jasdan voted for Congress due to local leader Kunvarji Bavalia as candidate, ditto same about Thasra where Congress candidate Ramsinh Parmar enjoys local influence. Same with Borsad, Petlad, Anklav where Congress candidate Bharatsinh Solanki had influence, or Dahod proper where Prabha Taviad enjoys support, or Chhota Udepur which is the town where Congress candidate lives. In south Mandvi and Vyara are Congress man Tushar Chaudhary’s strong areas.
