M&M seeks 2000 acre land in Gujarat for defence manufacturing

India’s one of the top automobile manufacturing companies Mahindra & Mahindra has demanded 2,000 acre land to set up defence vehicle plant in Gujarat. A business TV channel quoting sources reported that one of the options is Kutch while the other option is Dholera. The company may produce bullet-proof vehicles too in proposed plant. Official announcement on this is likely during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in January 2015.
M&M in Defence manufacturing:
Company’s contribution to defense systems began in 1947 when it started assembling the Willys Jeeps used in WWII in India. Today, the company provides total solutions for the entire range of light combat and armoured vehicles and their derivatives for defence and security forces. Company is the largest private-sector supplier of bullet-proof vehicles in India with its up-armored vehicles serving the Indian Army, Air Force, and Paramilitary and State Police Forces, and export of many of vehicles to other nations through the Ministry of Home and External Affairs.
M&M’s armored vehicles range includes the Axe, Rakshak, Marksman, up-armored and bulletproof Scorpios and Boleros, and Rapid Intervention Vehicles. Company’s purpose-built Special Military Vehicles (SMV) facility is situated near Faridabad, just outside of New Delhi manufacturing military vehicles, select artillery systems, and other land system weapons at competitively low costs, offering both India and foreign governments.
As the Indian Army pursues its Field Artillery Rationalization Plan and upgrade program, M&M facility also functions as a center of excellence for the design, development, manufacture, final assembly, integration and test of artillery systems.
Mahindra Defence Naval Systems (MDNS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mahindra Defence Systems incorporated in 2012 and has its manufacturing facility at Pune, Maharashtra. The customers include Indian Navy (Naval Dockyards, Naval Armament Depots, Weapon Equipment Depots, Ships and submarines), Defence Public Sector Undertakings, Defence Research & Development Organisation, Ordnance Factory Board etc. The product range inter alia includes torpedo launchers, decoy launchers, casings for various defence products in composites and alloys, components and sub systems of AK 630 anti aircraft gun, large radar and sonar transparent composite structures, components for use on submarines, transportation containers in composite and alloy material.
MDNS is also scheduled to supply various sub systems and components to a large number of foreign equipment suppliers catering to their offset obligations. For further details visit
