Muslims form major portion of Congress Councillors in AMC
December 03, 2015
Ahmedabad
Like always, in Ahmedabad city, majority of Congress Councillors elected are Muslims. In 2010 there were 19 Muslims elected from Congress party. This time there are 20. It should be mentioned that top Muslim political leader Ahmed Patel had visited the Muslim areas of city ahead of the polling and held meetings. In fact Congress has done well in all areas that have mixture of population of Dalits and Muslims including Dariyapur, Jamalpur, Saraspur-Rakhial, Maktampura, Danilimda, Baherampura, Gomtipur, Bapunagar, Sarkhej and Ramol-Hathijan. Due to majority of Muslim Councillors, Congress had appointed Badruddin Sheikh as the Leader of opposition in AMC in last term. In 2000 when Congress captured AMC, it had made a Muslim woman as Mayor for second half of five years term. BJP had fielded four Muslims in AMC polls this time but none has won. One independent Muslim candidate Imran Khedawala has been victorious in Jamalpur ward.
