Vijay Mallya scam: Jaitley passes the buck to Congress

New Delhi

Responding to questions raised by Congress MP in Rajya Sabha on Vijay Mallya scam, Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley today passed the buck to Congress party that was in power when entire Vijay Mallya scam happened. Jailty didn’t mention Congress or UPA in his short reply but read the dates during which Mallya scam took place. All dates were belonging to Congress led UPA government in power. Jaitley clearly pointed out that Mallya was given more benefits by UPA despite his accounts being declared NPA in 2009. In reference to Lalit Modi, Arun Jaitley explained how then Congress-led UPA government had allowed him to leave the country.

Jaitley said: Those companies and those persons were given banking facilities first in September 2004 and renewed on 2 February 2008. In this connection how bad account was given services is a matter of investigation which CBI is doing. 30 April 2009 was the date when the account was first declared NPA. But even after that this NPA was restructured and given more benefits in 2010. The dates tell the entire story. Uptp 30 November 2015 including interest the total liability is Rs 9091.40 crores. All institutions and banks have done the procedure of recovery, attachment. I have details of 22 cases filed across the country. Some assets are attached. Banks are trying to recover each Rupee. Banks went to Supreme Court to impound his passport, but he had left the country before that. The day he left the country, there was no order from any agency barring him to leave the country. When Lalit Modi left India, there was Congress government in power. Modi was slapped with FEMA law and not PMLA under which he could be stopped leaving country. If Congress MP wants more details, I can share them in chamber. Congress will need more introspection perhaps in this matter.
