Bhavnagar’s NGO ‘Prayas’ has organized an exhibition of photographs of birds that were injured during Kite flying festival in last several years. ‘Prayas’ rescues injured birds during Uttarayan for last ten years. Similar efforts are done by other NGOs and Forest department in Ahmedabad and some other cities too.
The exhibition of photographs of injured birds is open for public at Sardar Smruti hall. Once injured, such birds can never fly again and if taken care well, they live rest of the life on mercy of NGOs in cage.
It should be mentioned here that during Uttarayan festival, strong strings paved with glass powder and chemicals work like flying knives. In total, thousands of birds are injured every year during Uttarayan in Gujarat. ‘Flying knives’ strings also kill several people riding two-wheeler on road.
After several years of blood-bath the state government has released a notification banning glass-paved strings and Chinese strings this year before Uttarayan.
