Seeing the result of Chotila by-election, you might have an impression that BJP’s Bharatbhai Khorani’s victory is defeat of Congress candidate Niratben Dhoriya’s and Independent Shamjibhai Chauhan.

Technically this is true, but politically not. This is actually Niratben’s brother in real life and Godfather in political life – Kunvarjibhai Bavaliya’s defeat.

Congress party’s favorite Koli community leader in Gujarat, Executive President of state unit and sitting MP of Rajkot Shri Kunvarjibhai Bavaliya proved himself taller than the other leaders of his rank last year when he defeated BJP in its strongest bastion – the Rajkot Lok Sabha constituency. Kunvarjibhai could secure his victory because of changes in Rajkot constituency area made by the Election Commission and also due to weak BJP candidate unacceptable to large amount of BJP workers in Rajkot.

After being elected to Lok Sabha, Kunvarjibhai vacated the Jasdan assembly seat that he managed to win everytime in past even in the toughest times of his party in the state. When state assembly by-election for Jasdan seat was announced, Kunvarjibhai insisted his party to give ticket to his daughter. Congress party’s state unit was in wonderful illusion that Jasdan belongs to Kunvarjibhai and he would manage the victory for his daughter. No body in Gujarat Congress wanted to play with fire in Jasdan by refusing Kunvarjibhai’s daughter’s ticket. So sitting MP’s daughter was alloted party’s ticket. Soon after this, Kunvarjibhai’s ex-election office in-charge who was actually a suitable candidate for Congress party joined BJP. He managed ticket to contest the poll on BJP ticket and won by getting suitable amount of Patel votes plus some Koli votes. The third candidate in fray was ex-BJP man hailing from Koli community. He cut Congress’s Koli votes considerably to cater victory on plate to the BJP. Jasdan’s defeat was a big surprise for Kunvarjibhai and Gujarat Congress.

But even after Jasdan defeat, it seems that neither Kunvarjibhai nor his party learned anything.

When by-election of Chotila seat was announced, Kunvarjibhai again started insisting to give his sister a ticket from Congress. There were two names in discussion. One was Shamjibhai Chauhan and another Niratben Dhoriya, a sister of Kunvarjibhai. The Congress party initially put Niratben’s name aside assuring Kunvarjibhai that if BJP selects woman candidate then the Congress party would give ticket to Niratben. But even after BJP announced male candidate, Kunvarjibhai continued to insist for his sister’s name as candidate and finally he was succesful. Niratben who does not belong to Chotila constituency area, who is a voter in Jasdan area, who couldn’t even vote in Chotila constituency got the ticket. And she is defeated. Shamjibhai who was denied Congress ticket mostly due to Kunvarjibhai’s pressure has stood second in electionr result leaving Niratben at third place.

Today’s election result has not only defeated Shamjibhai Chauhan and Niratben Dhoriya but more importantly it has diminished sitting MP, Koli leader and Executive President of Gujarat Congress Shri Kunvarjibhai Bavaliya’s image in his party very badly. If everything goes well, the next election of Chotila assembly will come in 2012 December. It seems that Shamjibhai would be the next candidate of Congress party in 2012 here. Bharat Khorani would have to work hard before that to win again.
