Modi for next gen NAREGA, demands JPC to check corruption
New Delhi, DeshGujarat, 24 July 2010
After attending National Development Council meeting in New Delhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi talked with the media person on his opinion that he submitted in the meeting on NAREGA issue. Following is what Narendra Modi said about his representation in NDC meeting regarding NAREGA.
“I have spoken on various issues during NDC. But about NAREGA, the Planning Commission chaired by honorable Prime Minister has circulated a document in which para 12.23 and 12.24 contains detail information on how NAREGA has become a den of corruption, how many new techniques of corruption have find place in this scheme. I have asked during NDC meet that a joint parliamentary committee should formed to seriously think about NAREGA and corruption associated with it. There should be a probe irrespective of any state. Another thing I have asked to the Prime Minister is that now Mahatma Gandhi’s name is connected with NAREGA, and the Prime Minister is Chairman of that, and if he circulates such report, then how serious is the issue? He should understand that. In Gujarat we spent Rs 1000 crore for water conservation infrastructure and we could collect 9000 mcft. In NAREGA, the government of India’s main objective is water conservation. They have spent about 47,000 crore. On the bases of consumed amount under NAREGA so far, has possibility of 50000 mcft water conservation actually achieved? I have suggested that there should be an expert committee. Suppose the villagers dig a lake, then we can empower them for usage of water stock to be achieved from that water body eventually. Then the same villagers can also do fishing in that water body, use for other purpose, they can sell water and earn service charge. Such integrated system can be developed.”
