Deaf and dumb people ‘talk’ through mobile phone in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, 20 August, 2011

You never know how people would use the technology ultimately.

Look at this example: thanks to 3G, now deaf and dumb person can actually communicate through the mobile phone.

The technology is getting great response among this class, thanks to the video calling facility.

Shaileshbhai Dave works at Gujarat’s Kandla port in Kutch district. He and his wife Anjanaben are deaf and dumb since birth. While the entire world is enjoying the best of the mobile technology, this couple was deprived of it because of their inability to speak and listen. The couple used to own mobile phones but its usage was limited to only text message aka SMS.

However with the arrival of 3G technology recently in Gujarat, the things have changed for this couple.

About 15 days back Shaileshbhai brought two mobile phones with 3G facility to home. When he showed video calling facility to his wife and when they actually used it for the first time, the mood in the house was jubilant.

Shaileshbhai can now call Anjanaben from office and both can now communicate with each other through video calling on 3G phone using sign language.

Anjanaben is from Junagadh and her mother, father, bhabhi, sister also are deaf and dumb.

Earlier the communication between them was limited to text messages, but after the arrival of 3G mobile phone technology, it has now become possible for Anjanaben to communicate to her relatives in Junagadh. Shaileshbhai also now talk to his deaf and dumb friends in Ahmedabad freely.

Perhaps those invented 3G and brought video calling didn’t know that this technology would be helpful to deaf and dumb class of people.

What an idea sirji!
