GMDC acquires 104 ha land for alumina plant and aluminium smelter project

Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation(GMDC) has acquired 104 ha land to set up alumina plant in Kutch district.
The project will need 400 ha land for first phase of this project which is to be set up in partnership with central government Public Sector Unit(PSU) National Aluminum Company Limited(NALCO).
First phase will see construction of alumina plant and aluminum smelter plant for which 100 ha land is required.Alumina is extracted from the ore bauxite by means of the Bayer process at an alumina refinery.
Aluminum smelting is the process of extracting aluminum from its oxide, alumina, generally by the Hall-Héroult process.
GMDC is in process to acquire 300 ha land for second phase of works.
The project worth Rs 15,000 crore(first phase around Rs. 5,000 crore) would be set up near Mundra.
The project is for one million tonne alumina and 0.5 million tonne aluminium smelter. GMDC will supply bauxite for the project from its group of mines in Kutch.
