Dye factory gas asphyxiation incident, number of deaths rises to 6 with succumbing of 2 more

Ahmedabad: With one more death today and one late last night the number of contract workers died owing to suffocation caused by formation of poisonous gas during cleaning of an underground effluent treatment chamber (tank) in a chemical factory in Vatva GIDC area here has reached six.

2 others were still under treatment in the ICU of LG hospital here.

The incident took place in the dye manufacturing company Advance Dye Stuff Industries situated on plot number C 1/400 in Phase 2 of the Vatva GIDC around 1130am yesterday.

‘First two contract workers had entered the underground chamber (tank) used as intermediate place for treatment of liquid effluent. When they cried for help 6 more went down,’ PI GIDC Vatva D R Gohil today said adding that a toxic gas formed in the tank which affected them soon after they entered it. It asphyxiated them.

The doctors declared four of them brought dead as soon as they were taken to the hospital. While another died late last night and one this morning.

Police has lodged a complaint in this regard and was conducting detailed investigation with the help of FSL.

The deceased have been identified as Devendra Dohre, Puransinh, Bharatsinh Parmar, Mauji, Jitendra and Sarvesh (four of them of around 25 years of age while the remaining two of around 30 and 45)
The company manufactures turquoise blues dye and export it too.
